A PLACE WHERE

Entrepreneurs Thrive

You know the struggle: working from home feels isolating, coffee shops are distracting, and you need a space that keeps you focused and inspired. That’s why Groundswell Coworking exists. We’re more than just desks and WiFi — we’re a powerhouse of connection, productivity, and business growth.

Jess Bommarito didn’t set out to start a coworking space. One day, she walked past a Win This Space sign, and something in her gut told her to apply. Her intuition said “ this is for you ,” but the doubts rushed in just as fast.

Was she crazy to even consider it?

Instead of ignoring the idea, she followed her curiosity and attended the upcoming open house. Maybe the space itself would spark inspiration for what her next business could be. She signed up for the email list and went home, uncertain but intrigued.

And then, the unexpected happened.

She received a follow-up email, but there was a mistake. Instead of blind-copying the candidates, every competitor’s email address was visible on the email. So naturally, Jess scoped out her competition. And so did everyone else.

Moments later, her phone rang. It was someone she had only met once before, also on the email list. He noticed Jess’ name, asked around for her number… and called with a proposition. He had checked out the space for his own business, but it was too big for his needs. “All I really need is a desk and a whiteboard,” he said. “What if other entrepreneurs need that too?”

That one phone call changed everything.

She got into a flow state writing her business plan, and somewhere in the process, a phrase appeared on the page: “a groundswell of activity, inspiration, and innovation brewing in the community, just waiting for a space.”

That was it. Groundswell Coworking was born.

Jess presented her vision, won the contest, and got the keys 2 weeks later.

What followed was a whirlwind. The next five months were scrappy, resourceful, and exhilarating, building a community in found spaces like local retail stores, real estate offices, and coffee shops while working behind the scenes to transform the space she had just won. A long-forgotten hidden gem was about to become something alive, something electric.

Since officially opening our doors on March 1, 2019, everything has changed.

We navigated multiple lockdowns having only just celebrated 1 year in business, uncertain of what the future held. But what we learned in those challenging years was that community wasn’t just a nice-to-have—it was everything.

When the desks, coffee, and WiFi became inaccessible on and off for months at a time, members banded together in ways that left us speechless:

  • Helping each other pivot their business offerings online.

  • Launching a pop-up Facebook group to track government updates and funding opportunities, offering financial guidance and cash flow advice.

  • Hosting virtual workshops on improving home offices, staying productive, and keeping motivation alive.

  • Gathering on Zoom just to hang out and check in on each other.

We realized then just how deep our community roots had grown. It wasn’t just something we said—it was fucking true.

That’s why we doubled down.

Because this was never just about office space. It was and will always be about people. It is about what becomes possible when we stop trying to power through alone and instead lean into a community that has our backs.

TAKING BIGGER RISKS

Chasing Bigger Dreams

While all of this was happening, we also bought our building. A group of us, all members of Groundswell, saw an opportunity — not just to expand our space, but to transform our entire corner of the street.

We had a vision: young entrepreneurs filling the building, living upstairs, working downstairs, spilling out into the community, igniting new ideas, and shaping the local economy.

We didn’t know, when we bought the building, that we’d close on it at the start of the lockdowns in April 2020. It was a tumultuous ride. Construction costs quadrupled. People worried about their businesses, their livelihoods, their ability to pay rent. And yet.. we learned. A ton. We figured out what it meant to own and operate commercial and residential real estate, to navigate uncertainty, and to trust the process.

Two years later, we sold the building to a local company that has completely revitalized it—because that’s what they do best.

They were in their zone of genius, and we knew it was the right move.

OUR NEXT CHAPTER

WATERFORD

Leaving Simcoe wasn’t the end of Groundswell — it was an evolution.

We relocated to Waterford, landing in a beautiful commercial space across from Shadow Lake and next to Wishbone Brewery.

This time, we weren’t guessing. With five years of experience running a coworking space, we knew exactly what we needed and how it had to function. We built it with intention, and it shows.

Thanks to the brilliant Nancy Lemmon of Lemmontree Design, we transformed a sterile office with white walls and fluorescent lighting into a warm, inviting, and dynamic workspace—a space our members love.
